How to Apply for Japan Visa with COE?

Japan is one of the most-visited countries well-known not just for its undeniably beautiful sceneries, but also for attracting many foreign nationals who want to engage in other activities such as education and employment. However, to be able to enter Japan legally, you need to prepare the necessary documents required by the Japanese government.

Identifying the purpose and intended length of your stay is the first step. If you intend to stay longer or wish to work, a long-term visa will be needed. But before securing this visa at the Japanese Embassy, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at the Immigration Office in Japan.

What is Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?

The Certificate of Eligibility is not the same as a visa – it is an important pre-requisite before you can apply for a long-term Japan visa such as Work Visa and Student Visa. COE serves as a pre-approval that you meet the entry requirements set by the Japanese government. Quite unsure if you’re eligible to acquire a COE? How to Get a COE?

It is the Immigration Services in Japan who issues Certificate of Eligibility; hence, you need a sponsor in Japan to process the COE application on your behalf:

  • Your employer, if you will apply for a work visa
  • Your school, if you will apply for a student visa
  • Your spouse, if you will apply for a Japan Spouse Visa

The application for Japan COE could take anywhere from one to three months so make sure to apply for your COE in advance.

Does the Certificate of Eligibility have a Validity?

Yes, it is usually valid for 3 months upon issuance, but as a special measure, COE, which were issued between October 1, 2019 and January 29, 2021, will be treated as valid for 6months from the date of the entry restriction measures against the Philippines being lifted or until April 30, 2021, whichever comes first. This regulation may change depending on the Embassy.

What are the Documentary Requirements when Applying for Japan Visa with COE?

In addition to the original and photocopy of Certificate of Eligibility, you have to submit the following documents for your Japan visa application:
