So, why Siargao?

Known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, this teardrop-shaped island captured the hearts of both local and international travelers for its surfing spots and dreamy tropical atmosphere. Located in the province of Surigao del Norte, Philippines, Siargao offers tons of activities and views to enjoy even for non-surfers – from beach hopping to canyoneering.

Despite its popularity and booming tourism, even voted as the best island in the world by Conde Nast Traveler readers in 2019, the island remains peaceful and serene, especially during the pandemic. And for remote workers, it’s the perfect environment for a work-from-home setup. Imagine waking up to a quiet morning, only hearing waves crashing to the shore, then catching a sunrise to start your day – what a dream! Now we understand why people started swarming the island for both short and long-term stays; some even decided to say goodbye to their urban lives and moved to this tropical paradise.

Covid situation in IAO

Jobs in the pandemic are already stressful, in general, but with the continuous rise of covid cases in the metro and a new covid variant emerging, working while living in the city feels more suffocating than it already did before. Thus, making people itch for an escape or completely move away from city life.

Currently, there are no reported active cases on the island. One less thing to worry about for people working remotely! The municipality of Surigao del Norte had strictly closed its doors to tourists following the announcement of the nationwide lockdown last March 2020, keeping the Siargaonons and the stranded tourists in the island safe and the cases contained; and had only welcomed domestic travelers since November 2020.

Work-Life Balance? Check!

Exploring the island during their free time is one activity that digital nomads are currently enjoying in Siargao. Both private and public transportations are readily available on the island so all you’ll ever need is a thirst for adventure and your itineraries!

The most popular mode of transportation in Siargao is by motorbike. But another way to savor the beauty of the island is by bicycle. You can rent one for only Php 1500/month. It’s a great way to sneak in a workout and to de-stress after a long and tiring shift. You’ll have a glimpse of the local community, cruise through the sea of palm trees and chase stunning sunsets. You can’t get a more balanced life than this!

Stability is the key!

A reliable internet connection is a remote worker’s lifeline. But does a small island of Siargao provide this necessity? Of course! Although you really won’t find a fast and stable internet connection everywhere on the island. Some resorts, hotels, and restaurants in General Luna, specifically in Catangnan, where Globe’s (local telecom company) satellite is, will be your best bet if you need a steady connection for work.

Make sure to take a backup Smart (another local telecom) sim or a pocket wi-fi with you!
